I am currently delving into a deeper understanding of the true meaning of the cross of Christ, how it relates to salvation and how it reveals God's heart.

Laodicea - Rumor notes 18

Revelation 3

14 "To the angel of the assembly in Laodicea write: "The Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Head of God's creation, says these things:

15 "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot.

16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of my mouth.

17 Because you say, 'I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing;' and don't know that you are the wretched one, miserable, poor, blind, and naked;

18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, that you may become rich; and white garments, that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and eye salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

19 As many as I love, I reprove and chasten. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.

21 He who overcomes, I will give to him to sit down with me on my throne, as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father on his throne.

22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies."

Amen – Faithful and True Witness

Though much of this was reviewed in chapter 1, it is relevant to remember this in the context that it is our days that is being addressed particularly in this message. Amen means to affirm, to second what someone else has said, to join in thought and intent with others. Jesus is the affirmation of the truth about God He came to make plain us. This is amplified in His assertion that He is the Faithful and True Witness, the only valid and complete revelation of God desperately needed at the end of this world's history filled with lies and confusion about Him. This is the same message as found in Hebrews 1:1-3.

This also alerts us to the reality that in our day there is little faith left on the earth (Luke 18:8), making it difficult to find truthful witnesses particularly when it comes to knowing the truth about God. There are no shortage of opinions and assertions from people claiming to promote what they call truth, but John points out that we need to test every spirit (1 John 4:1). Revelation is full of vital information about the lying and deceiving nature of counterfeits, so it is important to be reminded in this last message from Jesus to the assemblies, that the way we are to test every spirit is to know the original truth as it is only in Jesus as the standard of measurement by which to test every other spirit.

Head of God's creation

This come from the Greek word arche meaning commencement, head, ruler, beginning, origin, corner, power. There are many who argue that Jesus/Son of God was the first to come into existence before any others in creation – begotten of God. I don't want to make it a contentious issue, yet as I try to see the reasoning behind what they teach, there are too many gaps and assumptions I can't get past in the reasoning relied on, along with ignoring a lot of passages that raises serious doubts about this.

Out of the list of words defining arche, I believe origin and head fit best into the context. Jesus knew this would be a divisive issue in our time, which is represented by Laodicea, when a heavy emphasis on God-denying evolution is making serious inroads into the thinking even of Christians. Thus the emphasis here and in the first angel's message in Revelation 14 on creation is a reminder that Jesus is the originator of all creation and is thus the head, whether He is recognized as such or not.

Keep in mind however, that just because He is the head, the idea of headship from heaven's perspective is something very different than how we often perceive it today. Even a number of years ago, and still in other languages, the meaning of being head is strikingly different than how it is understood in our culture. The true meaning of headship – what Christ does for the church and what the man is supposed to be for the wife – is not about domination, control or anything of that sort. It really means supporter, supplier, meeting the needs of another and making sure they are not lacking in anything. In short, the true meaning of being the head is all about serving, not a ruling over others like many insist today.

This should make sense after our dark thinking about God becomes cleared up a bit. God, and love itself, is all about serving and attending to the needs of others, not ruling over. Jesus made this explicitly clear to His disciples, yet it is one of the most overlooked and ignored passages in Scripture because it directly contradicts our penchant to be in control. We have the same problem the disciples had who were ever wrangling over who was the greatest even on the cusp of the impending death of their beloved Friend and Leader. They were so blinded to the danger of their desire that they could not perceive many things Jesus had to share with them. So too in our day, which is why Jesus is trying to alert us to our true condition that is opposite of what we imagine it to be.

Another central issue in the war that has long been ignored, is the importance of who is the representative for all humanity to the rest of the universe. Satan occupied this position for a long time, making things very difficult both for our planet as well as for God's efforts to reverse the curse after our first parents abdicated their dominion to Satan. Because of the cross and what it did for the credibility of Jesus, that position was lost by Satan and the authority was given to Christ. Because Christ overcame death itself and is now completely beyond its power for all eternity, there is no chance of His ever losing that role to anyone else like it was lost by Adam. This is one of the major themes we find in the NT, yet is tragically underrated and ignored by most people in our day.

Here Jesus is reminding us that He is now the head, not Satan, and that as our head as well as the origin of all life and the sustainer of all creation, He alone knows our true needs and our true condition. Because of this He alone can offer us the needed perspective and the remedy we must have in order to join Him in the benefits of being salvaged and restored back to our original design for joy.

you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold or hot

What do cold and hot represent? I think it is safe to say they relate to how we think and feel about God, about our spiritual condition and our zeal for knowing God and sharing the Good News with others.

If this is the case, doesn't it seem a bit strange for Jesus to say that He would prefer anyone being cold rather than lukewarm? It would seem that being lukewarm means you have at least some interest in knowing God, that you are not completely against him, fighting against truth and love with abandon. Why would Jesus say it would be better to be all out for evil than to be a mixture of good and evil?

What about passion? We think of being hot as full of passion. This fits perfectly with the biblical definition of God's wrath and fire, one of the most misunderstood metaphors in Scripture and something we need to understand in our study of this book of Revelation. In fact, the word wrath itself is translated from the word orge which literally means great passion. The imagery of intense flames and rivers of fire are used in Scripture to describe what comes directly from the throne of God, and also what is in the eyes of Jesus. This is the cause of the torment in the last lakes of fire.

Again, I think it would be safe to say that passion correlates to hot. We think of red-hot passion. But there is hot passion involved while falling in love. We say a woman looks really hot, meaning she has a body figure that can arouse intense desire for her in a man. Whether or not this is healthy or proper is beside the point here. What I am pointing out is that the word passion alone does not define whether it is a passion related to desires for evil or for good, it is merely an amplifier in need of a correlating term as to what it references to before we can understand how to best interpret it.

If passion is connected to what Jesus has in mind when He talks about hot or cold, then is cold the lack of passion? Or might lukewarm be the absence of passion while cold might describe a harded heart, devoid of genuine love, hard as steel? A cold heart is capable of passion, though likely a calculating passion to exploit others, to commit acts of violence, to suck the life (heat) out of others. If this is so, why would Jesus prefer a person to be cold, devoid of love, compassion, mercy and humility rather than a mixture of warm love and coldness? We imagine a cold-hearted person as hopeless, impossible to save, beyond repentance, immune to the drawing grace of God. And while there is a point of no return beyond which an individual has so destroyed their capacity to respond to the mercy of God that it is impossible to reverse the character they have formed over their lifetime, I think Jesus is talking about those who have not yet crossed that divide.

A cold person might be what John talks about in this passage.

There is a sin leading to death. I don't say that he should make a request concerning this. (1 John 5:16)

It appears that Jesus views a mixture of hot and cold to be more dangerous that living full-out in opposition to God. Yet if we are honest, doesn't lukewarm describe many? I know of very few who are full-on passionate either for or against God. Saul of Tarsus exhibited being passionately opposed to anyone who was responding to the graciousness of God as seen in Jesus, using every means possible to use violence, intimidation and law to deter as many as possible from participating in the kingdom Jesus came to set up. Yet after being confronted personally by Jesus in the way to Damascus, filled with intent for further violence against believers, Saul over a two or three year period became transformed by Jesus into Paul the persecuted, an unstoppable passionate confessor of the goodness and kindness of Jesus, a fearless witness in defense of God who sent Jesus to reveal His heart to the universe. Do you think maybe Jesus had Paul in mind when He said these words to John about it being better to be hot or cold rather than lukewarm? That is possible.

It is helpful here to recall what James says about being double-minded. That could be a part of what it means to be lukewarm, a mixture of hot and cold, a condition we might feel very comfortable, safe, balanced, in the middle, not too extreme in any direction. These ideas appeal to us as reasonable, appropriate, desirable. Yet Jesus says it would be better to be extreme one way or the other rather than to play it safe in the middle. Does this mean that safe might be something different than what we have assumed? James says a double-minded person is unstable in all their ways and it is impossible for them to receive anything from God. That should be a wake-up call for us, a reality check. It certainly should raise serious questions for a professed believer if they are unable to receive anything from God. Yet does that not describe the frustration many of us have already?

I confess that much of my life has been spent in frustration with God because it seemed He didn't listen to many of my prayers. For years I felt like I was in competition with God in some cosmic contest to see who could win (winning for me meaning my getting into heaven). Yet it felt like God was doing everything possible to have excuses to exclude me from heaven, while Jesus was supposedly in between us mediating for me against God while I was supposed to work as hard as possible to get my act together so Jesus could convince God to let me somehow slip into heaven in time to escape the fires of hell. I viewed religion, God and life all from this perspective for much of my life, and frustratingly I still find this perspective still lingering in my subconscious reactions too many times.

Like many others, I can feel that somehow God seems to be against me rather than for me as Paul describes in Romans 8. Like others, I can wonder why my cries to God seem to go unnoticed, or worse yet ignored or maybe even scoffed at by God. I know this may sound harsh, yet I have to be honest as I resonate with the feelings and frustrations of others when it comes to seeking a 'successful' relationship with God who is supposedly passionate love, yet seems so often not to do what I imagine needs done to save me from apathy, depression or the ever-present potential for lust in various aspects. Why does it seem that God refuses to magically remove these things from my heart, like I hear as happening to others? Is God really as impartial as He says He is in Scripture, or am I the exception to this? I know that many people share at least some of these feelings and struggles, trying to make sense out of the gospel and how to relate to love. Yet is this merely a symptom of living in a lukewarm condition, where mixed feelings about God prevent me from living in His hot passion of love because I still have too much fear, preventing me from receiving what I desire to experience?

I confess the Spirit has been speaking with me for weeks about this message to Laodicea and I have been taking it seriously, longing to move into a deeper intimacy with God, to become hotter instead of feeling like I am merely treading water. I look at my very small church and wonder why it seems to not move forward or backwards with my leadership. I cling to a promise given me years ago by the Spirit that God is going to do something here someday so big and amazing that I cannot begin to imagine it, and if I want to participate in it I need to stick it out until it comes. Yet years have passed and there seems to be little evidence of a revolution, though I have been seeking to share honestly and openly what God is teaching me. Is the problem that my lukewarmness blocks God from being able to release the mighty power of the Holy Ghost among us? Is God waiting for someone else to come along and move things beyond what I am capable of handling? How can I take seriously the words of Jesus here and move to hot from lukewarm as I long to do? Are my fears of change so deeply entrenched in my subconsciousness that secretly I am continually held hostage by them and thus block God from having His way even in other people's lives?

What I have been and continue to do every time I think about it, is to intentionally ask God to give me the offered solutions outlined in this message. I know all too well how I have been conditioned throughout my life to be afraid of emotions, yet at the same time being taught that we are supposed to be passionate in our zeal for God. This resulted in a condition of double-mindedness that still plagues me and I realize only God can cure me. Yet I need to participate, to give Him authority to do whatever it takes to break this logjam, the stalemate, the impotence of living double-minded because of opposing priorities. I must be saved from the fears that block me from moving into the unknown, enjoying the high risk adventures where love is unpredictable and cannot be managed or controlled, but also requires trust in God's heart. This is the future Jesus invites all of us to plunge into, leaving behind our elaborate systems of checks and balances and cautions designed to keep us centered in logic, often giving systematic theology higher priority than embracing God's passionate love for us personally.

I will vomit you out of my mouth

An interesting thought came to me recently. If something is vomited out of the mouth, it had to have already been inside previously. That implies that to be in this danger, one would need to have already been ingested by Jesus but are causing Him too much discomfort and indigestion.

The phrase out of my mouth also alerts us to one of the key symbols in Revelation, that of what comes out of the mouth of various entities. In most places what is seen coming from His mouth is a sword, highly significant both in the real meaning of sword from heaven's perspective as well as where it is located. Yet here we find something quite different about to come out of His mouth.

We would do well to ponder this things, not just establish some tidy interpretation and move on like we have it under our belt now and don't need to think about it any longer. This is not merely interesting theology or prophecy to solve, it has to do with our own destinies in a very real way.

You say..., but you do not realize... (NIV)

You were wearied with the length of your way; yet you didn't say, It is in vain: you found a reviving of your strength; therefore you weren't faint. Of whom have you been afraid and in fear, that you lie, and have not remembered me, nor laid it to your heart? Haven't I held my peace even of long time, and you don't fear me? (Isaiah 57:10-11)

I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing

Behold, you are wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that is hidden from you; by your wisdom and by your understanding you have gotten you riches, and have gotten gold and silver into your treasures; by your great wisdom and by your traffic have you increased your riches, and your heart is lifted up because of your riches-- therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because you have set your heart as the heart of God, therefore, behold, I will bring strangers on you, the terrible of the nations; and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom, and they shall defile your brightness. They shall bring you down to the pit; and you shall die the death of those who are slain, in the heart of the seas. Will you yet say before him who kills you, I am God? but you are man, and not God, in the hand of him who wounds you. (Ezekiel 28:3-9)

What does this mean, that he set his heart as the heart of God? Insisting that God is like him? This description of Lucifer turning Satan is highly significant, for the same things that poisoned the mind and destroyed the love of Lucifer is what he uses to do the same to us. And everything he invented as part of his alternative reality to replace God's design counterfeits the true principles of creation.

Are we not to set our heart on God, to be transformed to have our heart as the heart of God? Why would this be a problem for Lucifer if it is something we are designed to so to glorify God? Or is this a case of needing to go deeper into a passage beyond a simply surface reading?

you are the wretched one, miserable, poor, blind, and naked

Why is it so difficult for us to see our own actual condition? Why does God have to spell out our condition to us so clearly and yet it continues to seem unreal? What is it that so blinds us that we read these words of warning by Jesus for years and still are not affected by them at a deeper level? How do we perceive the attitude of Jesus and His motives for saying this about us?

Possibly the most dangerous condition to be in is to believe one is safe, secure and comfortable when in reality they are quite the opposite. Complacency is possibly the most fatal condition to experience, for it robs us of any useful incentive to change or believe we have a need for it. Yet what is it that works effectively to accomplish changing this condition? Threats, intimidation, enticements of rewards combined with threats of severe punishments? What does it take to get a warning through to those who feel that only others are in danger but they are the exception?

Philadelphia - Rumor notes 17

Notes for Rumors 10/10/19 Start Recording

Revelation 3

10 Because you kept my command to endure, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, which is to come on the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.

11 I am coming quickly! Hold firmly that which you have, so that no one takes your crown.

12 He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will go out from there no more. I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from my God, and my own new name.

13 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.

you kept my command to endure, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, which is to come on the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth

There is a clear shift between the message to Smyrna which came previously and this message to Philadelphia, meaning brotherly love. The testing in the first message is on God's children while the testing Jesus says is coming will come on the whole world, i.e., all those who dwell on the earth. In fact Jesus says they will be kept from this test, which I find interesting and in need of further explanation. What are some parallel passages that might shed light on this shift? And who are those who dwell on the earth?

This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn't come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God. (John 3:19-21)

Here we see a parallel description of what Jesus says will take place. Testing is the same as judgment. Judgment is not like worldly version of judgment where a judge artificially determines someone else's fate and sentences them to be rewarded or punished according to artificial law based on principles of commerce. True judgment is simply how a person reacts to exposure to truth, especially the truth about who God is and what He is really like. Those who dwell on the earth are all who cling to the dark lies of Satan about God, while those who do the truth are all who dwell under the shadow of the Almighty and rest in His love for them no matter how bad things get around them.

Light sooner or later comes to everyone. There is no escaping being exposed by the light of God's truth, and the essence of that light is not severe confrontation by an offended deity as many suppose but is the truth that God is love and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). This is the true light that Jesus brings into the world that He calls judgment. That means that what we believe in our heart about God's love will determine who we relate to the light when it approaches us, which it inevitably will. Will we hate the light, be afraid of the light and love darkness – the lies Satan has conditioned us to believe – instead of embracing the light as revealed to us by Jesus? If so, we will resist coming to the light because we know it contradicts what we have invested our lives in as our identity. So long as we put our trust in any other source of value and identity other than the truth that we are loved by God simply because we are His children, the light will be seen as a threat to us and we will hate it.

Jesus says that those who do the truth come to the light that their works may be revealed or exposed. Being exposed can be terrifying, which is why so many people are loathe to allow the light to come too close to them. Like Adam and Eve after embracing the lies of Satan in the Garden, running to hide behind the fig leaves of the tree they had adopted as their new standard of reality, all who love the darkness that hides their condition from being exposed are destined for a judgment they perceive as terrifying. They refuse to believe that the light coming to expose them has healing power to save them. They only see the truth as a threat, and this is because they cling to the lies of Satan that God is double-minded just as they are and thus is coming to punish them for disobeying His rules. This is all darkness and is what is threatened to be exposed by the light that comes from Jesus' revelation of God's heart.

So, what makes the difference for those choosing to come to the light anyway, even though they know they will be exposed? Does this mean they are good enough to be exposed, that their condition is favorable and they have no problems or sin in their lives? Not at all! What it means is that they trust that God is love and that love is what they need to be rescued from all the dysfunction in their lives.

Notice what Jesus says about those who come to the light willingly. What to they know and trust about the exposure that is inevitable by coming to the light rathe than waiting and hiding until the light comes to expose them. What is revealed by the light is not merely their works, but the reality that everything they have done has been in God.

This has enormous implications and repercussions for our way of thinking. Is this suggesting that all their works have been perfect, pure, honest and completely loving at all times? Hardly. What Jesus is saying is that no matter what we have done, we are already in God and have been all along. Being in God or in Christ as the New Testament puts it, is not something we achieve by being good enough, contrary to what religion has asserted. All humanity was created in God originally, and all humanity has been put into Christ by merit of what Jesus achieved at the cross. This means that all those who are hiding from the light and who hate the truth, are just as much in Christ and in God as those who come to the light to be exposed. The difference is not in whether or not they are in God but whether or not they will use their will to believe it and act on it by coming to Him just as they are to embrace His love for them. This is the issue that the testing is all about we are looking at in the messages to Smyrna and Philadelphia.

This testing is what happens in relation to when we chose to be exposed by the light that God is love. If we choose to believe that His love means we are already loved and longed for by Him, and that He has no ill intent towards us but only wants to heal, save and transform us back into reflecting His image of pure love again, the testing acts as motivation to draw us to cling to this light tenaciously despite all the oppression and threats and violence used against us to convince us otherwise by those choosing to believe the darkness. Thus the testing becomes the very means by which we may be sealed into trust of God's love for us and we become so settled into that truth that not even the threat of death can move us. We fasten our hearts and our identity alone on the hope and belief that Jesus' love is stronger than death and that He has the keys to spring us from that prison should the enemy throw us into it. But we will come to the light no matter what and cling to the truth that everything we have and and continue to do is within the circle of the love of the Godhead, not outside of God separate and distant from Him.

We may choose to come to the light of truth that we are loved and live our lives within the context of God's presence with us at all times, and that choice will result in the transformation of our being from the inside out. This involves resistance against the powerful squeeze of the world to force fit us into its mold of value based on performance or achievements or identity based on good or bad behavior. We embrace our identity as rooted only in the love Jesus has expressed for us and refuse to believe or rely on any other source no matter how compelling. Thus the truth sets us free from the confusion and darkness of Babylonian intoxication of double-minded beliefs about God's character of love that we reflect. We choose to enter into judgment willingly and early so as to be exempt from the judgment that comes to test all who dwell on the earth who have chosen to hide from the light and hate it.

The sins of some men are quite evident, going before them to judgment; for others, their sins follow after. (1 Timothy 5:24 NAS95)

It is the choice of each person as to when they will be sealed by the testing truth of God's love in judgment. They can choose to be exposed now while their characters can still be transformed by the light, or they can avoid the light until it becomes impossible to hide any longer and it becomes a terror.

I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will go out from there no more

What is this about? Obviously it is a metaphor of something very important to us.

What does it mean to be a pillar in the temple of God?

What is important about not going out from there anymore?

What is the temple of God? All who allow the Spirit of God to dwell in them, guide them and synchronize them with heaven's activities and perspective compose the true temple of God, the body of Christ. So what might it mean to be a pillar?

A pillar is not only a permanent fixture of a building but a supporting column that holds up the structure in a vital way. What are the implications of this?

Why might it be desirable to not go out from the temple anymore? What does going out mean?

By faith, Abraham, when he was called, obeyed to go out to the place which he was to receive for an inheritance. He went out, not knowing where he went. By faith, he lived as an alien in the land of promise, as in a land not his own, dwelling in tents, with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise. For he looked for the city which has the foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (Hebrews 11:8-10)

Now Yahweh said to Abram, "Get out of your country, and from your relatives, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you." (Genesis 12:1)

Name/Identity

He who overcomes won't be harmed by the second death (Smyrna message)

I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows but he who receives it. (Pergamum message)

I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, and my own new name

At the very core of the war being fought is the truth about identity, both God's identity and ours. We are created to reflect God's identity, so it will be impossible to discern the truth about any human's identity without knowing the real truth about God's identity which is revealed alone in Christ His Son.

What we see in Revelation is the story of this war over who correctly defines God's identity, the Lamb or the Dragon. And while it may be clear to the reader that the Dragon is not the truth about God, that is only because the symbols used make that clear. However, in 'real life' as we call it, the truth is not nearly so clear. This is because we don't actually see dragons and terrifying beasts and harlots riding on them like we find in Revelation. What we see are well-hidden deceptions masquerading as religious ideas and political organizations all claiming to be the answer to the world's problems. And because they rely on power and fear or deception and corruption to achieve their goals, their true nature is impossible to discern without something clear to reference that actually knows the truth of reality.

What we find all around us in this world are clamoring attempts to define our value and to assign our identity in society or religion. Because our sense of identity and worth are the core motivations for everything we do and affect every relationship we have, this is what must be addressed most clearly.

Why does Jesus go to such great lengths about what name we should identify with in this passage? Notice there are three different names Jesus lists here and all of them He promises will be written on those who overcome. That raises the question of what it means to overcome, which is closely connected to our sense of identity. As long as we remain in the dark about our true identity there is no way we can overcome the evil that lies entrenched deep in our subconscious heart. What we must overcome is not some enemy outside of us, but rather the enemy, the sin within (Romans 7:15-18) that was implanted there by God's enemy to deface the image of God in our soul.

1 I will write on him the name of my God

2 the name of the city of my God,

3 my own new name

I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him a number, one hundred forty-four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads. (Revelation 14:1)

Name of my God

For this cause, I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know Christ's love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:14-19)

Name of the city

I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready like a bride adorned for her husband. (Revelation 21:2)

One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, who were loaded with the seven last plagues came, and he spoke with me, saying, "Come here. I will show you the wife, the Lamb's bride." He carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, (Revelation 21:9-10)

For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all. (Galatians 4:25-26)

My own new name

To him who overcomes, to him I will give of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written, which no one knows but he who receives it. (Revelation 2:17)

For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until her righteousness go forth as brightness, and her salvation as a lamp that burns. The nations shall see your righteousness, and all kings your glory, and you shall be called by a new name, which the mouth of Yahweh shall name. (Isaiah 62:1-2)

In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely; and this is his name by which he shall be called: Yahweh our righteousness. (Jeremiah 23:6)

In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely; and this is the name by which she shall be called: Yahweh our righteousness. (Jeremiah 33:16)

This is how we embrace our true identity – by absorbing the true identity of the God we are to reflect.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another. (John 13:34)

Therefore we know no one after the flesh from now on. Even though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now we know him so no more. (2 Corinthians 5:16)

Why do I suggest that the city of our God corresponds to the Holy Spirit as our Mother? Because as I connect the dots it all falls into place, and it also fits the family paradigm that permeates all of the teachings of Scripture about how God designed for us to live and interact with Them.

God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion...." (Genesis 1:26)

The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God." (Luke 1:35)

The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don't know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit. (John 3:8)

But as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:12-13)

Behold, how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn't know us, because it didn't know him. Beloved, now we are children of God, and it is not yet revealed what we will be. But we know that, when he is revealed, we will be like him; for we will see him just as he is. (1 John 3:1-2)

So what do we see here? Jesus was born of the Holy Spirit when She came upon Mary's body with the power of the Almighty, impregnating her with the very seed of Father God. Thus in a mysterious way, the Spirit was co-mother with Mary.

In turn, Jesus tells Nicodemus that it is necessary for anyone desiring to even see or enter into His kingdom, that a person must be born of the Spirit. In other words, we must experience a new birth to identify with Jesus by allowing His divine Mother, the Holy Spirit, to birth Him through Mary. The outcome of all this is that everyone who allows their hearts to have a divine conception take place inside of them are also born again themselves in the process and are led by their true Mother, God's Spirit, each moment of their lives. This Mother who is part of the Holy Family of the Godhead then forms and holds together the entire body of Christ, guiding them, mentoring them, inspiring and empowering them to reflect the same glory of the Father that Christ reflected. And the way Christ reflected the truth of God's heart was the same way we are to reflect it, by allowing the Spirit to motivate His every move, word, thought and relationship. He models for us how to be a child. Then when fully matured, He plans to marry us as His bride to share deepest intimacy with the Godhead.

What I see Jesus saying here to those who overcome, is that they need to lock in their personal identity by identifying with each one of the Godhead – the Father God, the Holy Spirit who is our true Mother and who binds us together into composing the City of our God, and a new perception of Jesus.

It should be clear by now what it is we need to overcome. It is related to our identity which is directly tied to who we identify with and allow to define who we are and our true value. This is what the battle over our name is all about.

I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now is come the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. They overcame him because of the Lamb's blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn't love their life, even to death. (Revelation 12:10-11)

What needs to be overcome? What is coming from the accuser. What we must overcome, rise above, is all the slander against God regarding His true character and identity that is supposed to be reflected by human beings created on earth. The infection of these lies are what distort our reflection and deface the image of God in our soul.

I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them. I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus, and for the word of God, and such as didn't worship the beast nor his image, and didn't receive the mark on their forehead and on their hand. They lived, and reigned with Christ for the thousand years. (Revelation 20:4)

It is becoming ever more clear that the stark contrast being battled out is over whose version of God we will embrace and reflect, who we will identify with and absorb their identity which we will inevitably act out in our life as a result.

Here are contrasted the only two options in the war over identity. We will either allow the beast or his image to mark us, either internally or merely externally, with an identity that involves a view of God similar to how the beast and false imitations portray Him, or we will overcome all false portrayals of God by embracing the revelation of God's heart as evidenced by the Lamb's blood who demonstrated so clearly how God acts when mistreated, exploited and humiliated.

Those who overcome the lies of the accuser about God align their own testimony with the testimony of the True Witness who is the hero of this book and the hero of the universe. Overcomers receive their identity from rejecting every false idea about God's heart and ejecting it from their psyche to have it replaced with a view of God who is exactly like the Lamb reflects. Thus, because the Lamb is the perfect reflection of God, and those who allow the Lamb to transform them into that same image/reflection, by beholding the reflection of God in the life and spirit of the Lamb, they become ready to participate as a composite body called the Bride of the Lamb who is fit to share His sentiments, perspectives and emotions which are all relatively new compared to what they imagined previously.

Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord, the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)

Philadelphia - Rumor notes 16

Revelation 3

7 "To the angel of the assembly in Philadelphia write: "He who is holy, he who is true, he who has the key of David, he who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says these things:

8 "I know your works (behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut), that you have a little power, and kept my word, and didn't deny my name.

9 Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, of those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but lie. Behold, I will make them to come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

An Open Door

What does a door represent?

Access through a wall designed as an obstacle to otherwise prevent entrance to some area.

The control mechanism by which to regulate access, usually overseen by a doorkeeper.

Metaphor for access to a heart, i.e., regulation of who has access to our affections and devotion.

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)

After these things I looked and saw a door opened in heaven, and the first voice that I heard, like a trumpet speaking with me, was one saying, "Come up here, and I will show you the things which must happen after this." (Revelation 4:1)

I was asleep, but my heart was awake. It is the voice of my beloved who knocks: "Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled; for my head is filled with dew, and my hair with the dampness of the night."

I have taken off my robe. Indeed, must I put it on? I have washed my feet. Indeed, must I soil them? My beloved thrust his hand in through the latch opening. My heart pounded for him. I rose up to open for my beloved. My hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with liquid myrrh, on the handles of the lock. I opened to my beloved; but my beloved left; and had gone away. My heart went out when he spoke. I looked for him, but I didn't find him. I called him, but he didn't answer. (Song of Solomon 5:2-6)

Here is seems clear that the door is the access to our own heart, where Jesus needs our permission before being able to come into intimacy with us. But how does this relate to the door mentioned to Philadelphia? Jesus says that door is one that no one can shut.

Then he brought me back by the way of the outer gate of the sanctuary, which looks toward the east; and it was shut. Yahweh said to me, This gate shall be shut; it shall not be opened, neither shall any man enter in by it; for Yahweh, the God of Israel, has entered in by it; therefore it shall be shut. (Ezekiel 44:1-2)

Thus says the Lord Yahweh: The gate of the inner court that looks toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the Sabbath day it shall be opened, and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened. The prince shall enter by the way of the porch of the gate outside, and shall stand by the post of the gate; and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening. The people of the land shall worship at the door of that gate before Yahweh on the Sabbaths and on the new moons. (Ezekiel 46:1-3)

Now after the Sabbath, as it began to dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. Behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from the sky, and came and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it.

(Matthew 28:1-2)

Jesus therefore said to them again, "Most certainly, I tell you, I am the sheep's door. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep didn't listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture. (John 10:7-9)

Most certainly, I tell you, one who doesn't enter by the door into the sheep fold, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But one who enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (John 10:1-2)

What door are these passages referring to here? Access to where? For whom?

When they had arrived, and had gathered the assembly together, they reported all the things that God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith to the nations. (Acts 14:27)

By comparing this message with a very similar one to those in Smyrna, I think we can discover something even more significant relating to this door. It may well be referring to the door opened by the death and resurrection of Jesus, a door impossible for anyone, including Satan himself, to shut. Think about all the passages in Scripture relating to this issue, that talk about Jesus never again dying, about Satan refusing to release any of his captives, etc.

You Have a Little Power

Forces shall stand on his part, and they shall profane the sanctuary, even the fortress, and shall take away the continual [burnt offering], and they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate. Such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he pervert by flatteries; but the people who know their God shall be strong, and do [exploits]. Those who are wise among the people shall instruct [many]; yet they shall fall by the sword and by flame, by captivity and by spoil, many days. Now when they shall fall, they shall be helped with a little help; but many shall join themselves to them with flatteries. Some of those who are wise shall fall, to refine them, and to purify, and to make them white, even to the time of the end; because it is yet for the time appointed. (Daniel 11:31-35)

By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively. Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me. He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong. (2 Corinthians 12:7-10)

Kept My Word

"Behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book."

(Revelation 22:7)

One who has my commandments, and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him." Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?" Jesus answered him, "If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him. He who doesn't love me doesn't keep my words. The word which you hear isn't mine, but the Father's who sent me. (John 14:21-24)

Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his lord.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also. (John 15:20)

I revealed your name to the people whom you have given me out of the world. They were yours, and you have given them to me. They have kept your word. (John 17:6)

I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith. (2 Timothy 4:7)

Didn't Deny My Name

Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me; lest I be full, deny you, and say, 'Who is Yahweh?' or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. (Proverbs 30:8-9)

I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God; but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God. (Luke 12:8-9)

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up, and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had determined to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you,

(Acts 3:13-14)

Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the Antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son, the same doesn't have the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also. (1 John 2:22-23)

For there are certain men who crept in secretly, even those who were long ago written about for this condemnation: ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master, God, and Lord, Jesus Christ. (Jude 1:4)

Synagogue of Satan

We studied this synagogue in depth when we looked at the message for Smyrna. However it is good to note an important comparison between these two messages.

With Smyrna, what followed was a warning and an admonition to not be afraid of the suffering that was coming, instigated by the devil. They were to remain faithful all the way to death.

Here there is a contrasting future predicted. Many of the same elements are listed as with Smyrna, only this time with quite a different turn of events. There are the same two groups, a testing, the need for faithful endurance and a crown of life. But this time their enemies will come and worship at their feet while the testing will happen to those who dwell on the earth while those who are faithful will be spared. Let's compare these two visually to see the parallels more obviously.

Synagogue of Satan

Smyrna

Philadelphia

who was dead, and has come to life

I have set before you an open door, which no one can shut

I know your works, oppression, and your poverty

you have a little power

blasphemy of those who say they are Jews

kept my word, and didn't deny my name

blasphemy

know that I have loved you

who say they are Jews, and they are not

those who say they are Jews, and they are not, but lie

blasphemy

lie

Don't be afraid of the things which you are about to suffer

kept my word, and didn't deny my name

(perfect love casts out all fear)

the devil is about to throw some of you into prison

I will make them to come and worship before your feet

you may be tested; and you will have oppression for ten days

I also will keep you from the hour of testing

oppression for ten days

the hour of testing

you may be tested

test those who dwell on the earth

Be faithful to death

you kept my command to endure

Hold firmly that which you have

I will give you the crown of life

so that no one takes your crown

What can we condense out of these comparisons; what are the underlying issues involved here?

Testing. But what is the test over? What is being tested?

Fear of death.

Blasphemy. Lies.

Keeping the word and command of Jesus and not denying His name.

Knowing that Jesus loves them.

What seems to be the focal issue that all of these things revolve around is belief in God's love personally, and tenaciously clinging to that truth and reflecting it instead of living in fear. It seems that the lies mentioned are not merely about whether or not the opponents are really Jews, God's chosen people, but includes why they are acting as persecuting enemies. Since they are of the synagogue of Satan, and Satan is the great accuser and the father of lies, then the testing is likely over an attempt to get God's true children to believe Satan's lies about themselves and about God.

In the message to Smyrna which comes first, the test come to those who are struggling to cling to the truth about God's attitude towards them, that He really loves and cares for them even when the world is doing everything possible to treat them as if He doesn't care about them. Thus we see more clearly how the intent of the world's system that is under Satan's domination, is to convince everyone that it is not enough to rest in God's love for us. The synagogue of Satan is from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil which represents double-mindedness, especially in how we view God. The Tree of Life represents single-mindedness, trusting that we are loved by God and resting from any and all attempts to work to change His mind about us or impress Him with any righteousness of our own.

The lies of those who belong to Satan's church/religion/synagogue not only involve claiming that they are on God's side, but include all sorts of beliefs that involve adding requirements that people must do in order to achieve salvation. Again, the war is over whether resting in the truth of God's love is enough to overcome evil and maintain order and peace in society, or if there is need of fear and force in order to keep evil in check and maintain law and order. Religion and societies alike in this world all claim that there must be a mixture of fear and enticements for rewards in order to effectively achieve harmony and peace in the world. Yet Jesus came to establish a kingdom where total freedom is respected and obedience is based purely on appreciation and reflected love for the trustworthiness of God. The conflict is always over what we will believe about how God should govern and how obedience should be achieved, and thus the core issues of contention will always be God's character rather than our righteousness.

I will make them to come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you

If indeed the first testing is on God's children to harden their grip on God's love for them in the face of intense contradiction of liars and proponents of Satan's accusations against God and His children, then this prediction that they will come and worship before the feet of God's true followers is ripe with implications we should explore. Again, the core issue that Jesus identifies is the issue that Jesus has loved them, those who are tested over this very thing by Satan and his followers. Evidently there comes a time when those who have oppressed all who are clinging to their faith in God's love for them overcomes all the evidence to the contrary being used to discourage them, and their opponents feel compelled to admit that they have been wrong and become willing to come to the feet of those they have persecuted to worship.

What I have to wonder about is the deeper meaning of this prediction of worship. What kind of worship is this referring to? Does this mean that all the enemies of God's children will suddenly abandon the lies they have believed and join God's true children in worship of the God who they now see loves them too? Do some of them, but not all of them, do so? What kind of worship do they do at the feet of God's true children? Are they worshiping the true God with suddenly awakened love and appreciation for His truth and trustworthiness, or do they worship in fear that if they don't worship they might be punished for not doing so? If this is the case, they would still be in double-mindedness which according to James would mean they still could not receive anything from God because they remain unstable in all their ways and thinking.

you kept my command to endure, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, which is to come on the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth

I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he will go out from there no more

I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, and my own new name
